No jealousy from me at all. My school has put more than their share of state hardware in the trophy case.

There are several schools in the LPD and Region who can claim to having lots of "state hardware" in their trophy cases... JJ Kelly, Powell Valley, etc.

Yet, I can't think of any team in the LPD who has been more successful in multiple sports, both boys and girls, as Gate City.

Out of our 22 team state titles (not to mention several individs), they have came in football, wrestling, baseball, golf, girls basketball, girls tennis...

I don't think anyone questions the past success of your sports program.

Time for a rant.

Gate City has all but dominated the LPD since they have been back. Size of course doesn't matter (even though, they'll sit here and tell you that their 10th player is as good as other teams top player). Make no mistakes, having a larger pool doesn't guarantee you results, but it does help (or if it doesn't, you need to smack some coaches).
That all being said, you watch not just here but any board that GC faithful visit, and they get a negative stigmatism attached to them. There are some good people in Gate City and some good posters. On the all-district, I asked simply if everybody is discriminating against Gate City, why did Godsey get coach of the year? How many players did Gate City have on the girls all-district team? Why was there more respect given there? There was more competition, they earned the respect, Godsesy earned it, as there was pretty good/close competition between them, Kelly and Clintwood. Player of the year, well normally this goes on scoring. Not always right, but normally the case. Now in the boys, hey Vermillion may have done a great job, but did Norton not have less players, less time (due to football), and still managed to be right there, and also beat them? Read the comments on the board during the year, you'll find few who say that Norton wasn't the most improved club from the beginning of the year until the end.

Seriously, Vermillion is Joe Torre. He has the best, if he wins, its expected, if he doesn't, then its a horror. Kind of like what Colobro had this year. He finally doesn't win, and you had a bunch ready to string him up, can him, get rid of him.

I'm constantly struck by how everybody else biotches and moans and whines and complains, but all Gate City does is work, but here everytime they don't get what they want, think they deserve or everytime they lose, its just like everybody else. They say they dont whine or complain, the difference is they dont do it as much in district as others, but get them to wherever they do lose, and its the same thing. They lose to Norton, it was the worst called ever. Others complain about their handchecking, etc, its 'they allow physical play up state get used to it' but this is the second time in a row they have lost, committed a lot more fouls, and yes, complained about how the game is called.

I'm not downing them for this, just wish the blinders would be removed, and they would see that they do the same things that they complain about others doing. Why wouldn't they? We all support our teams, and we all hate to lose. We all (yes even the Gate City faithfull) have our biases.

The point you made was success in multiple sports. Fairly recently state titles have came in golf and gals b-ball, but thanks for helping me continue to point how down the league has been. Schools like JJK, PV, Appy when they were bringing the bling home were fortunate to be playing in the most brutal distric in the state IMO. If you were the LPD champ, regardless of the sport, you had a legit shot at winning state. I have seen many fine baseball teams (one in Lebanon who was 25-0, and Jody Salyers and his very fine St. Paul squad for example still lament those [censored] Indians, knowing we stopped them from winning what we ultimately won). I remember watching 2 undefeated state champs slug it out, walking out of the gate after PV and Appy put on that show, saying "[censored], sucks that somebody had to lose". Surprise, surprise, they both brought it home that year (again)

The schools in the LPD did have the bulk of their success in the 80-90's WHEN the league was STRONG. As of late, the league has been on CD level (yet we laugh at the CD although their schools regularly beat us on the gridiron-something that didn't happen when the league was stout (another example: A 10-0 Tom Walker squad that gave up an eye-popping 21 points TOTAL in 10 games, getting hammered 23-0 at home by an 8-2 JJK squad in the playoffs in 92. If I remember right, the Raiders did the same to TS).
The league is weak. This has been born out more times than not when GC has made the big stage and failed to deliver.
Waltzing through a down league bites you in the arse when it is showtime.

Gate City fans are just better. We all have strong school spirit, get over it.

Gate City has been the Atlanta Braves. They win win win win the East (or the LPD) but they haven't been able to go on and win it all very much.

Now would the other teams in the NL East have loved to been them? Absolutely.

And Indian_dad is right, there is no question that the LPD as a whole is down. Of course, and boy am I asking for it here, when you're enrollment is down 50% in the last 25 years, its hard to expect things to be just as they were.
